School Liaison Project
 

 

The Somali Home School Liaison Project was initiated in 2002. The aim of the Home School Liaison Project is to work with Somali families and Schools in Stepney area to over-come barriers that may prevent children from achieving their potential.

 
Our Objectives

To improve the line of communication between schools and the pupils and parents. Our support workers undertake the role of translators and provide advocacy for parents. They also ensure that parents are aware of what their children is learning at schools and their legal responsibilities.

To work with teachers to better understand the cultural sensitivities for Somali families through training workshops for both teachers and parents and encourage Somali parents to become school governors to help raising education standards.

To increase the self-confidence of children through helping with school work and offering extra curriculum based lessons and using local Somali/ none Somali graduates as mentors.

To provide social activities during school holidays including trips, play games and sport development. OSCA aims to assist local schools to Improve the educational standard of Somali pupils in Tower Hamlets.

The Project is currently working with the following schools: Sir John Cass Foundation and Redcoat School, Central Foundation Girls School, Ben Jonson School, Harry Roberts, St Paul’s Way Community School and Malmesburry School.
